The theme for this years’ World exposition is ‘Water and Sustainable Development’. The history of lace, in its own way, shows the importance of respecting our environment and being ecologically conscious. The superb, delicate laces made in Belgium in the could not be reproduced today. The process for producing the fine linen threads requires among others clean river water, which has become difficult to find in Belgium nowadays.

Painting from Albert Caullet representing the river “ De Leie” which was famous for the flaxindustry in the Flanders.

The link between nature and lace goes far beyond the technical aspects of its creation. The basic geometric designs of early laces quickly evolved into somptuous recreations of flowers and nature scenes. These natural elements were used as symbols for various virtues and vices. The creators of lace paid respect to nature and the balance that exists in the world as a whole. It is this balance we have to contemplate as we move forward.

Of course, the importance of ecologically balanced water development goes far beyond our own fascination with lace.

We are excited to contribute our way of looking at nature and culture to the global vision of the World Expo.
