MORE ON WARLACE

Tablecloth in Point de Paris. The lace has been made during the World War I. The design shows different symbols representing their countries. The eagle stands for America, the chrysantenum for Japan, the lion for Belgium, the rooster for france, the bear for Russia, the unicorn for England.

This war lace showed the gratitude from the lacemakers for the support during the war. Thanks to Herbert Hoover, the lacemakers could work again. He sent food and even thread.

Here you can see the eagle which represents the US. Herbert Hoover donated 140 million dollars to the Belgian lace committee. The Belgian lacemakers lived in bad working conditions. They couldn't afford to buy food, let alone thread to make lace. The donations made by Herbert Hoover helped the lacemakers improve their situation.

Here you can see the lion which represents Belgium.

The Lace Committee was established in 1911.Originally called Les Amies de la Dentelle (Friends of Lace) it received Queen Elizabeth's patronage. After the German occupation it changed its name to Lace Committee.

The bear which you can see represents Russia. This indicates that the tablepiece was made during the war. After 1917, with the Russian Revolution taking place, the lacemakers avoided using the symbol of Russia.

Other countries represented in the lace are France (the rooster), England (unicorn) and Japan (chrysantenum),...

This tablepiece, as all other warlaces, was made in gratitude for Herbert Hoover's help. Some of the warlaces donated to Herbert Hoover's wife were even used at the White House.
